Work is a fundamental topic often comes up in the IELTS speaking exam. Here is a list of the most essential words for the IELTS test that can help you achieve a high speaking score.

- to be called for an interview → to be invited to attend an interview → The candidate was pleased to be called for interview at her favorite company.
- to be your own boss → to have your own business → I started up my own business and now I'm my own boss.
- a dead-end job → a job with no promotional opportunities → I was working in a hosiery factory, a dead-end job.
- to do a job-share → to share the weekly hours of work with another person → When she returns to work, she will do a job-share and her salary will halve.
- a good team player → somebody who can work well with other people → She was such a good team player.
- full-time → the number of hours that people usually work in a complete week → From that day on, Alexander stayed with Jones full-time.
- a heavy workload → to have a lot of work to do → Heavy workload is one of the top reasons staff give for quitting.
- a high-powered job → an important or powerful job → It took me a year to find something and then I landed a high-powered job in sales.
- holiday entitlement → the number of days holiday allowed → I am being told this time must come out of my holiday entitlement.
- job satisfaction → the feeling of enjoying a job → I doubt I'll ever get rich, but I get job satisfaction.
- manual work → work that requires physical activity → He found a job in the oil field doing manual work.
- maternity leave → time off work given to a woman about to have a baby → My wife was on maternity leave while our 6-month-old son was starting to army-crawl.
- to meet a deadline → to finish a job by an agreed time → She worked all night trying to meet the deadline.
- a nine-to-five job → a normal jib that consists of an 8 hour day (approximately) → She was forced into a nine-to-five job to cover her costs.
- one of the perks of the job → an extra benefit you get from a job → Being able to work from home is one of the perks of the job.
- part-time → working less than full-time → He was working as a part-time security guard.
- to run your own business → to have your own business → I studied economics in college and now I run my own business.
- to be self-employed → to be your own boss (to have your own business) → There are no paid holidays or sick leave if you are self-employed.
- sick leave → time allowed off work when sick → He's been on sick leave since last Thursday.
- to be stuck behind a desk → to be unhappy in an office job → After spending years stuck behind a desk, Bob decided to quit his job and follow his passion for travel.
- to be/get stuck in a rut → to be in a boring job that is hard to leave → I'm stuck in a rut at this job and need to find something more interesting and challenging.
- to take early retirement → to retire early (to reach an age when you are allowed to stop working for a living) → I had to take early retirement due to ill health just over 18 months ago.
- temporary work → work done for a limited time only → He works in construction and is here on a temporary work.
- voluntary work → a work without pay → Now she is happily married and doing voluntary work.
- to be well paid → to earn a good salary → Kate is well paid and enjoys her job.
- working conditions → the hours, salary and other entitlements that comes with a job → This agency has excellent working conditions and a purpose-built design studio.
- to work with your hands → to do manual work → But there weren't a lot of physical jobs I could do, and I really enjoy working with my hands.
