Education is a cue card topic often comes up in the IELTS speaking exam. Here is a list of the most common education vocabulary you'll need in your IELTS speaking test that can help you achieve a high speaking score.

- to attend classes → to go to classes → Joe was a dedicated student who always made sure to attend the classes.
- bachelor's degree → an undergraduate course which usually lasts 3-4 years → She's going to transfer to Regis University to do a bachelors degree.
- boarding school → a school where pupils live during term time → She was sent to boarding school when she was nine.
- distance learning → a way of studying where tuition is carried out over the internet or by post → I am distance learning this semester because of my travel plans.
- face-to-face classes → as opposed to distance learning the traditional way of studying in a classroom with colleagues and a teacher → Students first learn by digesting synchronous lectures delivered in a face-to-face classroom.
- to fall behind with students → to progress less quickly than the others → He's falling behind at school.
- to give feedback → to offer guidance on a student's work → Your hard work and dedication to your studies have led to a significant improvement in your grades. (feedback)
- a graduation ceremony → an event where a successful student receives his or her academic degree → It was agreed on the day of his graduation ceremony.
- higher education → education usually in a college or university, that is followed after high school or secondary school → Students and their parents worry about the rising cost of higher education.
- an intensive course → a course that offers lots of training in order to reach a goal in as short a time as possible → They have gone through that very intensive course.
- to keep up with your studies → to not fall behind → I know you're having a hard time studying for your exams, but remember to keep up the studies, you can do it!
- to learn something by heart → to memorize it → A poem learned by heart has a different working than one read and forgotten.
- a mature student → a student who is older than the average and who has usually returned to education after a period at work → I recommend understanding mature students as an asset.
- master's degree → a period of study which often follows the completion of the bachelor's degree or is undertaken by someone → He took a master's degree in economics at Yale.
- to meet a deadline → to end a job or task in the time allowed or agreed → She worked all night trying to meet the deadline.
- to play truant → to stay away from classes without permission → She was suspended from her last school for playing truant.
- private language school → an independent school run as a business concern → Almost all of the rich, able students attend the elite private language school.
- public schools → exclusive independent schools in the UK → My son has just finished his education at a public school.
- a single-sex school → a school where only boys or girls attend → My brother attends a single sex school, so he's only around boys all day long.
- to sit an exam → to take an exam → The changes will affect many students sitting their exams this summer.
- state school → a school paid for by public funds and available for the general public → She left her excellent state school with pretty well no knowledge of chemistry.
- subject specialist → a teacher who has a great deal of knowledge about the subject they teach → All pupils should be taught by subject specialists.
- to take a year out → to spend a year working or travelling before starting university → And if they decide to take a year out and try again, it's not a sign of failure.
- tuition fees → the money paid for a course of study → The tuition fees went up this year.
- to work your way through university → to have a paid job whilst studying to support yourself financially → He worked his way through university, performing menial tasks in exchange for reduced tuition.
